SweetGrass: Sacred Hair of Mother Earth
SweetGrass is the sacred hair of Mother Earth; its sweet aroma reminds people of the gentleness, love and kindness she has for the people; this is why Native people pick it and braid it in 3 strands representing love, kindness and honesty.
A uniquely Native American scent found in the rituals of the Micmac, Seneca, Sioux and Cherokee people. In the myths of some tribes, such as the Ojibwe and Cree, SweetGrass is said to be the eldest of all plants.
Burned as an incense, sweetgrass is valued for its vanilla-like scent. When burned for healing or ritual purposes, the smoke from the braided SweetGrass is thought to attract good spirits and positive energies. It is used as a smudging tool to purify peoples auras, cleanse objects, and clear ceremonial areas or healing spaces of negative energy. SweetGrass can also be carried or worn as a protective amulet. This healing plant is also used in basket weaving.
Use SweetGrass by saluting the four directions, during funerary rites to release the spirit of the departed, or at any time that one wishes to bring about purification, harmony, peace, and uplift your spirit.
